Ali Shah was invited yesterday to NUST, College of E&ME – OffícialCollege of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering, NUST yesterday to conduct a seminar on how to reinvent yourself and unlock your true potential. It was an engaging session where he got to hear students perspective.
Three things he emphasised on:
1. Your GPA matters only get you your first job or if you have to go for further studies. What matters the most is learning practical skills. When you appear in an interview, they ask you what skills you have. How you can help their organisation grow. Therefore, equip yourself with the skills of future.
2. Reinvent Yourself: Our world is changing very fast. Adapt or you will perish. Competition will crush you. Learn new skills using Youtube and other online tools. Identify mentors in your field. Spend time learning from them. Follow them online on LinkedIn, Youtube etc. Consume their content online.
3. Invest in Yourself: Industry complains that the graduates being produced by the universities need months of training before they can start adding value for an employer. Invest in learning before you graduate. Your time spent wisely will be your best investment. Read books. Be in company of people who believe in you. Avoid those who ridicule you. Engineers are usually lacking in communication. Work on improving your communication skills.
The students who asked top3 best questions during the session were given a prize of a book on the topic of how to improve your communication by our company Xecofy’s chief communication officer Bob Ferguson.
I strongly advise industry professionals to visit universities especially your almamater to give back and engage with the students. They direly need your advice and industry perspective to get ready for practical life.
